How to cut a litchi – propagation of litchi
Cutting is a method of propagating plants that reproduces the characteristics of a parent plant. In the case of litchi, this method is used to obtain new plants from cuttings taken from an existing tree. Here’s how to cut a litchi successfully:
Equipment requirements:
- A sharp knife
- Small pots filled with soil
- Powder of cutting hormones (optional)
- Water sprayer
Steps to follow:
1. Take a cutting:
- Choose a flexible and healthy branch of an existing litchi.
- Cut the cutting with the knife, making sure it is 10-15 cm long.
- Remove the leaves from the bottom of the cutting, leaving only a few leaves on the upper part.
2. Prepare the soil:
- Fill the pots of soil and moisten it slightly.
- If recommended, you can soak the base of the cutting in cutting hormone powder to promote its rooting.
3. Plant the cutting:
- Make a hole in the soil using a pencil for example.
- Place the cutting in the hole by ensuring that the remaining leaves do not touch the soil.
- Slightly pull the soil around the cutting to keep it in place.
4. Water and protect the cutting:
- Spray water on the cutting to maintain optimal humidity.
- Place the pots in a bright place without being directly exposed to the sun.
- Keep the soil moist, but not wet.
5. Wait and watch:
- After a few weeks, the cutting should start forming roots.
- Once the roots are well developed, you can transplant the cutting into a larger pot or directly into the ground.
- Keep monitoring the growth of your new litchi plant and make sure to water regularly.
