How to spread a mango by aerial marcottage

Aerial marcottage is an effective method of propagating a mango tree, allowing to create a new plant from a branch of the parent tree. This technique is ideal to obtain plants relatively quickly and maintain the desired characteristics of the mango tree.

Materials required:

  • A healthy mango tree
  • A sharp knife
  • Light and draining substrate (such as peat with sand)
  • A piece of transparent plastic
  • Plastic string or fasteners
  • Water

Steps to follow:

1. Choose a healthy branch of your mango tree that is neither too young nor too old. The branch must be flexible enough to be folded, but not too rigid.

2. Make a bevel incision in the chosen branch, removing a thin layer of bark. This will encourage the emission of roots once the aerial marking is achieved.

3. Surround the incised part of the branch with damp substrate. Make sure the substrate remains constantly moist, but not wet.

4. Wrap the part surrounded by substrate with transparent plastic, making sure to seal the ends to keep the moisture inside.

5. Tie the plastic firmly with string or fasteners to form an airtight package around the marcottage area.

6. After a few weeks, roots should begin to form in the substrate. You can check by gently lifting a corner of the plastic to observe progress.

7. Once the roots are well developed, cut the branch below the marcottage area and plant it in a pot with a mixture of soil and compost.

8. Water the new plant regularly to promote its rooting and growth.

By following these steps, you can easily spread a mango by aerial marcottage. This method is ideal for obtaining new plants from your existing mango tree, while preserving the characteristics you like.
