Transforming plastic bottles into flower jars without waterings

Creative recycling is an increasingly popular practice to give a second life to everyday objects. An original and ecological idea is to transform plastic bottles into standalone flower jars that do not require frequent watering. This simple and fun method allows to create an original green space at home while participating in waste reduction. Here is a step-by-step guide to achieve this transformation.

Materials required

  • Empty and clean plastic bottles (different sizes if possible)
  • Scissors or cutters
  • Painting and brushes (optional)
  • Indelible felt
  • Gravel or clay balls
  • Soil and fatty plants or other suitable plants

Implementation steps

1. Preparation of cylinders: Start by cutting the plastic bottles to the desired height to make them flower pots. You can play on sizes and shapes for an original aesthetic effect.

2. Decoration (optional): If you wish, you can paint the bottles with ecological paint to give them a personalized look. Let dry completely before proceeding to the next step.

3. Preparation of the watering system: On the bottom of each pot, drill a small hole using a heated tip. This hole will allow excess water to drain and avoid asphyxiation of plant roots.

4. Assembly of the pot: Fill the bottom of each pot with a few centimetres of gravel or clay balls. This will allow good drainage of water and avoid stagnation. Then add soil until about one centimeter from the edge of the pot.

5. Planting: Choose plants suitable for pot and plant cultivation in soil. Make sure that the soil is packed around the roots to ensure that the plants are well maintained.

6. Initial watering: For the installation of the watering system, first fill the bottom of the bottle (the part that will serve as a reservoir) with water. Then insert the bottom part into the bottle by positioning it head down. Water will flow gradually, thus providing the necessary moisture for plants without the need for frequent watering.

Maintenance of standalone flower pots

  • Regularly check the water level in the pot tanks. Reload them with water if necessary.
  • Place the pots in a well-lit place but sheltered from the direct sun to avoid too rapid evaporation of water.
  • Avoid moving pots frequently so as not to disturb plant roots.
  • If you notice signs of over-watering or root rot, reduce the amount of water in the reservoirs.

By following these simple steps, you can efficiently transform plastic bottles into flower jars without watering, while contributing to the preservation of the environment. This fun activity is suitable for the whole family and allows to beautify your living space in an original and ecological way.
