How to grow Java plum tree from cuttings

Java plum tree, also known as black plum or Jamun, is a popular fruit species in South Asia. Growing this tree from cuttings is an effective method to reproduce the desired characteristics of the parent plant. Here is a step-by-step guide to grow your own Java plum tree:

Materials required:

  • Java plum tree shutters
  • Soil or mixture of peat and sand
  • Nursery pot
  • Hormone cutting (optional)
  • Watering

Steps to follow:

1. Preparation of cuttings

Choose healthy and vigorous cuttings of Java plum tree. The cuttings must be about 15 to 20 centimetres long. Remove the leaves from the bottom of the stem to expose a growth node.

2. Planting cuttings

Fill the nursery pot with the soil or mix of peat and sand. Make a small hole in the soil and gently insert the cutting by ensuring that the growth node is covered by the substrate. You can soak the base of the cutting in cutting hormone to promote rooting.

3. Watering

Water the soil slightly to moisten the substrate without soaking it. Make sure to maintain constant humidity while avoiding excess water, which could lead to rotting of cuttings.

4. Custody and maintenance

Place the cutting pot in a bright place but sheltered from the direct sun. Ensure that the temperature is constant and ideal for root growth. Keep monitoring and watering cuttings regularly.

5. Transplantation

After a few weeks, you can check if the cuttings have developed roots by gently pulling on the stem. If you feel resistance, it means that the roots have formed. You can then transplant the cuttings into individual pots with a nutrient-rich mixture of soil.

6. Subsequent care

Keep taking care of your young Java plum tree plants by watering them regularly, providing them with adequate sun exposure and fertilizing them as needed. Once the plants have reached a sufficient size, you can transplant them into the garden or into a large container to allow them to develop fully.

By following these simple steps, you can successfully grow your own Java plum tree from cuttings, and enjoy its delicious fruits in no time. Good culture!
