Grow onions on your roof: easily grow young plants until harvest

Growing onions on your roof is a great way to grow your own fresh vegetables, no matter what space you have. Follow these simple steps to grow onions easily, from seed germination to bulb harvesting!

1. Choose the right container

  • Choose deep containers of at least 20 cm to allow onions to develop fully.
  • Make sure the containers have drainage holes to avoid water build-up, which could rot the bulbs.

2. Prepare the substrate

Use a nutrient rich soil mixture to ensure healthy growth of onions. You can also add compost to enrich the soil.

3. Germ onion seeds

  • Place onion seeds in a container with water at room temperature for 12 to 24 hours to promote germination.
  • Transplant the seeds in small pots filled with substrate and keep them in a warm and sunny place.

4. Transplant young plants

  • When the onion plants have reached 10 to 15 cm in height, transfer them to the containers ensuring they are spaced about 10 cm apart.
  • Water the plants regularly to keep the soil moist but not wet.

5. Maintenance of onion plants

  • Be sure to weed regularly to avoid weed competition and fertilize plants with balanced fertilizer every two weeks.
  • Place the containers in a sunny, wind-protected location to promote onion growth.

6. Harvest onions

  • Onions are ready to be harvested when leaves start to fade and yellow.
  • Gently remove the bulbs from the ground and let them dry in the shade for a few days before storing them in a cool and dry place.

By following these simple steps, you can easily grow onions on your roof, from seedling to harvest. Enjoy your own fresh and tasty onions to decorate your cooked dishes!
