How to graft a mango tree
Manguier grafting is a common and effective technique for propagating mango trees, especially for those seeking to reproduce specific varieties with desired characteristics. Here is a step-by-step guide to show you how to successfully graft a mango tree.
Materials required:
- A mango to be grafted (graft holder)
- A mango scion (part to be grafted)
- A sharp knife
- An extensible plastic film to wrap the graft
- A graft tape
- Transplanting wax or paraffin to seal the transplant
Steps to follow:
1. Choice of rootstock and scion:
Choose a healthy mango tree as a rootstock and a vigorous scion from a mango tree with the characteristics you want to reproduce. Make sure the rootstock and scion diameters match for a better transplant success.
2. Preparation of plugins:
Remove grafts by cutting the ends of healthy branches of the mango tree to be grafted. Make sure the grafts have at least 3 to 4 buds. Store them in a cool and humid place until they are used.
3. Preparation of the rootstock:
On the rootstock, make a cross cut of about 2 to 3 cm in length. Then make a slot in the center of this cut to insert the plugin.
4. Cracked Registry:
Gently insert the prepared graft into the rootstock slot so that the graft and rootstock cambium are in contact. Make sure to align the cambiums on both sides to promote healing.
5. Fixing the Registry:
Wrap the graft with stretch plastic film to hold it in place and prevent air inlet. Then use a graft tape to secure the graft.
6. Registry seal:
Use grafting wax or paraffin to seal the graft and avoid moisture loss. Make sure the transplant is properly sealed to prevent infections and promote healing.
7. Post-graft care:
Place the grafted plant in a warm and bright place, sheltered from air currents. Water the plant regularly and carefully monitor its evolution. Once the transplant has taken, you can proceed with the size of the unwanted shoots.
By following these steps accurately and taking care of the grafted plant, you increase your chances of successfully transplanting a mango tree. Remember that practice and patience are essential to become an expert in mango grafting.
