I’ve used rose branches and the unexpected has arrived

Roses are beautiful and elegant plants that add a touch of beauty to any garden. If you like roses and want more in your garden, the best way to spread them is by cuttings. This may seem intimidating at first, but with a little practice and patience you can easily create new roses from cuttings.

Choice of rose branches

The first step to making rose cuttings is to choose the right branches. The branches should be fresh, healthy and about 15 to 20 centimetres long. Be sure to cut branches at an angle of 45 degrees with clean and sharp tools to promote healing.

Preparation of cuttings

Once you have your rose branches, remove the leaves from the bottom to leave only a few leaves at the top. Then soak the ends of the cuttings into the cutting hormone to promote rooting. You can also slightly scratch the base of the cutting to help form roots more easily.

Planting cuttings

Fill pots of soil and place the cuttings in, making sure each pot has at least two or three cuttings. Water the cuttings slightly to keep them moist, but be careful not to water them too much to avoid rot.

Maintenance of cuttings

  • Place the pots in a bright place, but avoid direct exposure to the sun.
  • Keep the soil moist by watering regularly, but let it dry slightly between waterings to avoid disease.
  • Monitor the appearance of roots by regularly checking the base of cuttings. It may take a few weeks.

The unexpected has arrived

Sometimes, despite all your efforts, there may be unforeseen events when roses are propagated by cuttings. Some cuttings may not take or rot due to excess moisture. Don’t be discouraged, it’s a normal part of the process and it will allow you to learn and improve for the next time.

Additional advice

  • Don’t hesitate to seek advice from experienced gardeners for tips and recommendations.
  • You can cover the cuttings with a transparent plastic bag to create a greenhouse effect and promote rooting.
  • Patience and perseverance are the keys to success in spreading roses by cuttings.

With a little practice and determination, you will soon be able to create beautiful roses from simple branches. Don’t be afraid of failure, because it’s an opportunity to learn and improve. Enjoy the process and soon your garden will be filled with beautiful roses that you have propagated yourself.
