The plastic bottles we use daily can be reused creatively to grow vegetables at your home. In this article, we will show you how to grow Malabar spinach in recycled plastic bottles.
Cultivate Malabar’s Spinach
Malabar spinach, also known as climbing spinach, is a delicious and nutritious vegetable that grows well in warm and humid climates. It is rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, making it an excellent choice for your home vegetable garden.
Materials required:
- Empty and clean plastic bottles
- Good quality soil
- Malabar spinach seeds
- Birds
- Marker
- Water
Steps to follow:
- Prepare the bottles: First wash and dry the plastic bottles carefully. Then cut the upper part of the bottle to create a container in which you will plant your seeds.
- Fill in the earth bottles: Fill the cut bottles with good quality soil, leaving a free space at the top to plant the seeds.
- Plant the seeds: Make small holes in the earth using a pencil, and place one or two Malabar spinach seeds in each hole. Cover the soil seeds and water slightly.
- Maintenance: Place the bottles in a sunny but windproof place. Keep the soil moist but not wet by watering regularly. Seeds should germinate within a few days and young plants will start growing quickly.
- Harvest: Malabar spinach is ready to be harvested when the leaves are well developed. You can pick them as you need by cutting the largest leaves. Make sure you do not harvest more than one third of the plant at a time to allow continuous growth.
With these simple steps, you can easily grow Malabar spinach in recycled plastic bottles at home. Enjoy the unique freshness and flavour of this delicious vegetable while helping to reduce plastic waste and promote a sustainable approach to vegetable cultivation.
